Aims and scope

National Science Review (NSR) is a new scientific journal published in English under the auspices of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, aiming at the international scientific community. Our goal is to provide timely reviews of recent scientific progress in China and around the world, perspectives and discussions on future development in various areas of science, as well as related topics of interest to the international scientific community, including international collaboration, policy issues, and the impact of science and technology on society. The journal covers most areas of the natural sciences, including physics and mathematics, chemistry, life sciences, earth sciences, materials science, and information sciences, with the following regular sections: Editorial, Reviews, Research Articles, Perspectives, Research Highlights, Critiques and Debates, Interviews, Forum, Featured Institution, and Special Topic.

Editorial

Written by Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editors, Editorial Board Members, or invited scientists and policy makers, on a broad range of topics from science to science policy and issues related to society at large. Editorial should be around 700 words.

Reviews

Extensive reviews covering recent advances in specific areas of science made by scientists within China and around the globe, together with historical overview and future perspectives. The content should be largely based on, or closely related to, the author’s own research and appropriate for readers from a broad range of scientific disciplines. Review should be around 8000 words.

Research Articles

These articles are expected to be original, innovative and signifi cant.

Methods section should appear between Conclusion and Acknowledgement sections. Research Article should be less than 5000 words.

Perspectives

Viewpoints and extensive commentaries on recent development in a specific scientific area, scientific research funding and administration, as well as science-related societal issues. Perspectives should be around 1000 words.

Research Highlights

Brief summaries and comments on recent scientific achievements, with emphasis on contributions by Chinese scientists. Research Highlights should be around 500 words.

Interviews

In-depth interviews of leading scientists and science policy makers in China and around the globe.

Forum

Discussions on timely or controversial issues in science and technological development, science policies and funding mechanisms, and other societal issues, in a variety of formats that include essays as well as edited transcripts of round-table discussions and point-counterpoint dialogues.

Special Topic

A special section of NSR in each issue, providing comprehensive coverage of a specific research area with signifi cant recent progress in China or internationally. Contents include extensive reviews, perspectives, research highlights, and interviews of prominent scientists.

Manuscript preparation

Articles are mostly based on invitation by the NSR Editorial Board. We welcome suggestions and submission of articles by individual scientists.

Information for Authors

Submitted manuscripts must not have been published (in print or electronic format) or be currently under consideration by another journal. The author should make sure that no part of the manuscript is copied from any other work only if all the permissions required (for print and electronic use) for any material drawn from other copyrighted publications have been obtained.

All persons designated as authors should qualify for authorship. Multiple corresponding authors are accepted in a single submission. Manuscripts should be written in concise and correct English.

Figures should be well-designed drawings or well-chosen photographs that illustrate key points in your article or that present relevant data economically. NSR editors will work with you to enhance your fi gures’ legibility, colour, style and consistency. Modifi ed fi gures will be sent to you for approval before publication. Please submit the artwork as a separate file.

Acknowledgements and details of non-fi nancial support must be included at the end of the text before references and not in footnotes. Personal acknowledgements should precede those of institutions or agencies. An example for Funding section is given here: ‘Th is work was supported by the National Institutes of Health (P50 CA098252 and CA118790 to R.B.S.R.) and the Alcohol & Education Research Council (HFY GR667789)’.

Number references consecutively in the order in which they are mentioned in the text. Reference numbers in the text are full-sized Arabic numerals in square brackets at the end of the sentence. For three or more consecutive references cited together, use, for example, [1–4]. Format other references as [4,5,12], without spaces between the reference numbers.

For references with more than three authors, list the first three and add ‘et al.’. For articles originally published in a language other than English, indicate the language in parentheses after the article title provided in English. The titles of journals should be abbreviated according to the list of International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Please supply the entire page range.
